ABSTRACT. – Correlations between the parameters of significant rain precipitations and altitude in the North-Western Part of Romania. The study analyzes the intensity of the correlation between the parameters of significant rain precipitations (frequency, duration, intensity, amount of water) and altitude, using warm season significant rain precipitation data (April – October) collected at 14 meteorological stations situated at altitudes between 123 m and 1836 m, over a period of 34 years (1975 – 2008). The meteorological stations considered were grouped by three area types : zone I, including the stations situates in the plain, hill and depression areas of the studied region; zone II, including the stations situated in the shelter created by the North-Eastern mountainsides of the Apuseni Mountains; and zone III, including the mountain stations. The analysis of the relationship between the precipitations’ frequency and altitude indicated a low correlation (R2 = 0.018), but within each zone this correlation coefficient ranged from 0.35 (zone I) to 0.71 (zone III). The highest values for the correlation coefficients were observed during the summer months (between 0.68 and 0.73). With respect to the duration of the rain precipitations, the correlation index decreased with increases in duration, which indicates a good correlation between altitude and convective rain precipitations. In the case of rain precipitations’ intensity, the best correlation with the altitude was observed for those with medium intensity, ranging from 0.01 and 0.16 mm/min.
